Quad on Kaiser with Salami

March 2011:  Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger is a tiny dive burger joint on the University of Michigan campus.  They have a limited menu and limited seating capacity, but they make great burgers.  The burgers here are fully customizable, and all built to order.  You get to pick your burger size, roll (bun), grilled items, cheese, and condiments.  You must tell the cooks these things in this order.  There are official rules to ordering here.  (Oddly enough, even when my last burger was ordered in the proper order with a printed list of the rules in front of us, they still left off the fried egg…)  In addition to the burgers, they also offer a few sandwiches, and a number of sides like fries, onion rings and deep fried veggies.

Our first visit here was a few years ago, and we made the mistake of driving up there on the day of the first Wolverine football game of the season.  The streets were totally packed, and Krazy Jim’s was incredibly busy, as in a 75-min wait to get your food busy.  When Mel eventually got the food last time, she came back to the car with a brown paper bag with grease stained through the side.  I knew that it had to taste good! (It did.)  Our most recent trip was faster, only about a 20 minute wait.  In any case,  I’ve been to this place a few times now, and the burgers are pretty solid.  They’re pretty greasy, but very tasty.  With toppings like salami, banana peppers, grilled onions and mushrooms, and fried eggs, it’s hard to go wrong.  The photo may not look like much, but it’s a damn good burger.  If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend checking it out.
