American Coney Island’s Dog

March 2010.  Since Detroit is only 45 minutes from Toledo, it seems sort of natural to make the drive to try two side-by-side Coney Dog stands featured on Man v. Food.  American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island are located at the corner of Michigan Ave and Lafayette Ave in downtown Detroit.  (It’s a downtown area, so expect to pay for parking.)  Both are (or were) owned by the same family, so they have a friendly competition going.    Both places serve similar coney dogs.  If I had to pick one, clearly American Coney has a better dog.  The chili was similar at both places.  Neither place had great service, but Lafayette was better in that area. The prices were sort of high for how small the coneys were.  Both of the shops were a little dirty, so if you’re afraid of that, steer clear.  The hot dogs were OK at both places, but neither of them had a dog I’d go back for.
